The VFX Industry And Online Outsourcing

Monday, June 14th, 2010

Lately, there seems to be a lot of talk regarding the problems VFX professionals are facing in the industry. Many studios all over the world are being forced to shut down because they cannot remain profitable in their highly competitive market. California has been the poster boy for this problem, but it’s a problem that is happening everywhere. This is a very difficult and sad situation that is affecting all studios around North America. Too many of these failed studios are not doing a proper job of managing their VFX production pipeline.

One solution that is being discussed by industry professionals is the idea of outsourcing some VFX work to various cities and countries around the world.

Outsourcing is not new and it’s not going to go away.  It may be time for people in the VFX industry to embrace the idea and see the great potential it could bring. The state of the industry right now is not great and could use some fresh innovative ideas. If more outsourcing was being done, small or mid size studios could supplement their income between big studio projects with smaller international projects from the comfort of their own studio.

Software Management Tools, such as the Talk Management System, are making this idea a reality. The TPM makes it possible for studios to manage their pipeline and outsource to anywhere in the world while staying in touch with one another in real time and working together to create the best, most cost efficient productions.

Effective Tools For Finding Employment and Boosting Your Online Presence

Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Having a professional portfolio, a well-designed resume and then making them accessible to hundreds of thousands of possible employers at any time is the winning combination for finding the right job or career. These days there are far too many generic jobs searching websites available on the net. There is a need for more industry specific job searching tools that are accessed by the decision makers during the hiring process.

Industry specific websites help to level off the playing field and ensure that the most qualified applicants will not be filtered out because of the sheer amount of applications that are received on a daily basis. Industry specific social networking sites such as the Talk Management Network are rapidly taking the place of generic job search sites that have users applying for every and any job they see.  Whether they are qualified or even interested in these jobs is sometimes irrelevant.

The problem with the generic job search websites is that some people use an automated program that sends their resume to every website. It is almost impossible for a hiring manager to go and sift through the many applications that are received. By using industry specific job search web sites, anyone who sends their application will at least be interested in the industry that they are applying for.  This sites help hiring managers find a qualified applicant in a quicker more efficient manner.

Softwares for Media & Entertainment

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Summary

Project management tools are pretty new for the entertainment industry and in many other industries. Since the introduction of MS Project, many other companies have been creating other products with similar functionalities. Some have succeed, others have failed. On the Internet, we can find many free or license softwares for all type businesses and budgets. Most of them do not answer the need of a production company or postproduction facilities because major changes need to be made to the existing software or you need 3, 4 or 5 different products to start having the feeling of tracking your production. Lack of customization options is also a reason for not buying an off the shelf product.

We can divide the project management industry (for entertainment) in 4 main sectors:

1- Assets management Definition: Assets management is a tool to help studios manage their content, files & physical assets.

2- Project management: Definition: Project management mainly looks over time schedules & time tracking.

3- Client management: Definition: Client management looks over client demands and changes.

4- Social Networking: Definition: Create networks and publish artists and company work & reels.
